The Engineering department of Kendal College offers a dedicated workshop, boasting industry-standard centre lathes, CNC systems, and 3D printers, and a range of computer facilities with the latest 2D/3D CAD software. The nine members of staff who run the department have over 140 years of combined industry experience, working in sectors such as military engineering, motorsports, nuclear energy, hydroelectric, manufacturing, and acoustics.

Course Overview

Professional engineers are at the forefront of developing new ideas in an ever changing world and are highly valued within industry. They form the backbone of research and development in their respective fields, as well as being inspiring leaders of teams and projects.

Level 4 Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificates provide a globally recognised qualification, offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment, as well as opportunities for students to progress into Higher Education.

The course runs for two years, with each academic year lasting 33 weeks. All teaching and delivery is based at Kendal College, one day per week.

Course content
The first year contains 4 common units, to allow learners to switch to Electrical Engineering in the second year, if required:

- Engineering Design
- Engineering Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Computer Aided Design and Manufacture

The second year contains 1 common unit, and 3 units specific to Mechanical Engineering:

- Managing a Professional Engineering Project
- Mechanical Principles
- Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines
- Operations and Plant Management

All units are assessed through assignments or practical investigations; there are no formal examinations. As assessed all work is submitted digitally, you should ensure you have an appropriate level of computing skills before commencing this course.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded with a Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (Mechanical pathway).

Fees and Student Finance:
The tuition fees for this course, starting September 2020, are 2500 pounds per annum. Payments are made at the beginning of the academic year or at the beginning of each term. Entry Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years of age or over and should have the following qualifications as a minimum:

GCSE English, at grade C/4 (or equivalent)
GCSE Maths, at grade C/4 (or equivalent)
Level 3 qualification in a related Engineering subject (NVQ, BTEC, A-level, etc)

Applications with no formal qualifications but with a wide engineering background may be considered, as will applicants who have different qualifications to those listed above. All applicants will have an interview with a college tutor, to ensure the course suits their needs.

Learners who achieve a HNC qualification typically move into supervisory and management roles within a company.



Course fees are per year. There may also be additional costs associated with the course (please see the course overview).

Student Finance
Whether you qualify for student finance depends on specific criteria. The main student finance package for full-time students includes a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan for living costs. Part-time students can access a tuition fee loan to pay for your course.

Generally, you will only get student finance if you’re doing your first degree-level qualification. This is true even if your previous course was self-funded.
