Course Overview

This is a creative two-year course that allows you to discover a wide range of visual arts media. The course develops your creativity, developing your idea generation skills along with practical and technical workshops that include:
- Printmaking
- Digital media
- Photography
- Sculpture
- 3D design
- Fine art, mixed media

The two-year course is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and is worth up to 168 UCAS points (Triple Distinction*) or 144 UCAS points (Triple Distinction). UCAS have recently changed the UCAS Tariff from September 2017 so they could include more qualifications. The new Tariff points are lower than the original Tariff points but the value remains the same, as universities will just use lower Tariff numbers in their entry requirements than in previous years.

Throughout the course we also deliver a core programme involving drawing, contextual studies and personal professional development.

In year one you will work towards completing set assignment briefs. They will involve contextual research that will be applied to practical workshops to develop your technical understanding. The workshops will inspire and drive your creative ability allowing you to produce a range of individual art and design outcomes.

In year 2 you will be able to build on the core skills learnt in year one, with opportunities to learn more specialist techniques in all workshops. Throughout this year you will get the opportunity to work towards client led project assignments providing you with real life industry experience.

The course finishes with a Summer Exhibition of your independent final project work. Throughout the course you will develop enterprise and presentation skills and be supported to achieve your progression goal, to potential universities, employment or further training.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main course. Those students who have not yet achieved a Grade 4 (or C) at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them. However, students will still have to achieve the stated Entry Requirements before they start the course.

On the Art & Design programme you will make use of all of our industry standard practical workshops to learn a range of processes, including -

Printmaking - Screen-printing, etching, aqua tint, intaglio and lino

Photography - How to use a DSLR, photo editing and studio lighting. Traditional darkroom practice.
