Course Overview

This is a practical, work-related course, which will involve studying projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. The course will introduce you to health and social care and provide an excellent basis to go on to more advanced work-related qualification. You will learn about all aspects of Health & Social Care, including, healthy body systems, HSC values and working in the health sector.

These qualifications provide a practical, real-world approach to learning alongside a theoretical background, giving learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment.

- Creative and therapeutic activities
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Work experience skills and Values
- Social Influences
- Health and Social Care Values

All level 2 learners also need to complete a two week block of placement or voluntary work as part of their programme, and this is a mandatory part of the level 2 programme.

All sessions involve a range of activities, including lectures, supported workshops, group and individual research, presentations and role play. The department also organises a variety of team building activities, e.g. Aura, bowling.

Presentations by the tutor and students will be used to develop communication and other transferable skills. To support differentiation a tiered level of questioning and case studies, for the different levels will be used, as well as mixed and same ability group work to challenge and support learning. Additional study support will be given when needed, either one to one or as a group.

The Level 2 First Extended Certificate includes two externally assessed units. These will be in the form of two hour-long exams but will assist learners as they progress into higher levels of study or vocational learning. The remaining units are assessed internally, and this assessment is ongoing over the duration of the course. Evidence for these assessments can be generated through a range of activities, including, role play, verbal presentations, essays, reports, case studies, witness testimonies, observation, portfolios, posters and leaflets.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a '4' grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

Entry Requirements

You will normally need either a:
- Level 1 qualification (at Merit or Distinction), and at least a GCSE Grade 3 in English Language, plus a satisfactory tutor reference
- or Four GCSEs at Grades 3-9, including English Language, or equivalent qualifications.

You will be given an interview to assess your suitability for the programme. It is also advisable to have a check completed by the Disclosure and Barring service. This does not mean that if you have any previous convictions or warnings that you will not be able to join this programme, but an assessment will be completed as to your suitability to progress on to the programme. After Your Course

Previous learners have progressed onto Level 3 full-time programmes of study in the areas of Health and Social Care, Early Years, Public health.

Other learners have progressed onto apprenticeships in health and social care and some learners have gone directly into employment within the sector.
